Khanum ke Bazar Waley

The origins of this family are also traced back to Lahore where two brothers embraced Islam due to the teachings of the Saint Shah Allauddin Khailvi. This was the period when Allauddin Khilji (1296-1316) was the ruler of India. The brothers, Mohammad Azam and Mohammad Azeem travelled to Delhi with some gifts to visit the ruler. The king granted them some privileges back in Lahore.  The brothers returned to Lahore but gradually, their descendants migrated to Delhi and settled in a locality called “Khanam Ka Bazaar”. Several generations conducted business in that area. Mohammad Baksh was a very successful businessman in this family who had a crockery and fine china business. He was the official provider of the fine china to the palace. He had a magnificent store in “Khanam Ka Bazaar” where rich people and princes/princesses shopped for china.

In 1857 when the Mughal rule was over and the English took over the control of the city, Mohammed Baksh was appointed in the committee of the dignitaries by the English. He refused to serve on the committee and preferred to pay the penalty over betrayal from the King. For him, the honor was to sit behind the chair of the king than to serve in a committee appointed by the English.

Another prominent family in this category is “Charrey Waale” The great ancestor of this family was Yar Mohammad who embraced Islam. He was a Rajput and brother of the Maharaja of Kashmir. His descendants migrated to Delhi and also conducted business in “Khanam Ka Bazaar”.
